Srijan Pal Singh is an author, public speaker, education innovator and social entrepreneur. Currently, he is the CEO and Co-Founder of Dr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam Centre, a non-profit organization working on integrated missions across multiple dimensions in an effort to continue on the vision and works of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
He was born and raised in Lucknow where he went to La Martiniere for schooling. He studied Engineering at Institute of Engineering & Technology, Lucknow and further went to Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad to study management. He was awarded the GOLD MEDAL for the best All-rounder Student of the 2009 batch at IIM-A and was also the President of the Student’s Council there.
He was appointed as Officer on Special Duty and Advisor (Policy and Technology) at the Office of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam where he worked as a close aide to the former president on various consulting works. Some of the projects include Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA), Kalam-NSS Initiative for Space-based Solar Power, What Can I Give Mission, Research and Public Awareness Project on Koodanakulum Nuclear Plant, Development Plans for various state governments such Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat and sustainable development model development of the governments of Maldives and UAE.
The PURA concept served as a predecessor to a new mission launched by Government of India in February 2016 as Shyama Prasad Mukherjee National Rurban Mission (SPMNRM) of which he is a Member in the Expert Panel. The National Rurban Mission aims to spur social, economic and infrastructure development in rural areas by developing a cluster of 300 Smart Villages across the country. He started the Advantage Bharat Fellowship – a rural immersion fellowship program for the top graduates and young corporates of the nation belonging to Harvard, IIMs and IITs. The name of the fellowship program was derived from the final book of Dr. Kalam – Advantage India (Harper Collins 2015). He is also the Mentor and Advisor for Uttar Pradesh Start-up Policy – a venture of the Government of Uttar Pradesh to promote entrepreneurship in the state and the Advisor for Innovations and Startups for the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Technical University with over 400,000 engineering students. In this capacity and his mentorship, his initiative, Startup Parikrama, has gathered over 3,500 business plans from the state, even from remotest locations – making it the largest B-Plan event in the nation. Several of these ideas are blossoming as enterprises.
Srijan has co-authored three books with Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam titled Target 3 Billion, Advantage India and Reignited. Target 3 Billion is a best-selling book on exploring how to uplift the 3 billion people living in abject poverty in the world through enterprise creation and investments. His book, Reignited (Penguin 2015) was a pioneering effort in making modern science a convenient read for people – especially children. Selling over 200,000 copies across 8 languages it was a national bestseller and nominated for the top five books of the category in the year. Following the success of this book, he penned down Reignited 2 (Penguin 2019). This second volume extends the journey and covers some exciting and cutting-edge fields in sciences which will shape out tomorrow.
Other best-selling books authored by him are The Black Tiger, What Can I Give?: Life Lessons from my teacher – Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam (The most memorable book of the year 2016 – as declared by Amazon India), Smart and Human– Building Cities of Wisdom (India’s first book on our way to build smart cities), Delhi Metro: Excellence in Management (as a co-author) and Khushhal va Samridh Vishwa, a Hindi adaptation of Target 3 Billion. He has also contributed to some leading dailies like the Hindu, Hindustan Times, Dainik Jagran, Economic Times and Patrika.
Besides, he is also associated with several social projects – Kalam Library Project, Barefoot IT, Nukkad Paltan, Operation Savdhaan, Kalam – NSS Initiative: Space-based Solar Power, UKCA Mars Mission for India and many more. The Kalam Library Project pioneered the idea of “Human Library” in the country and today it is spread as a free library to over 80 different remote locations in India – making it one of the largest non-government free networks in operation. These libraries also act as a career counseling center for the local youth in remote areas.
He founded India’s first Incubation Center for water-related innovations under the name of Kalam InnoBlu Center which is now coming up to solve the water-related challenges of India and other nations. This center was launched by Rajiv Kumar, the Hon’ble Vice-Chairman of NITI Aayog in July 2018.
He has also collaborated with the United Kingdom Center for Astrobiology (UKCA) in University of Edinburgh and founded the UKCA-KC Mars Mission for India where Indian youth are being educated free-of-cost about life and living on Mars and young designers from India get an opportunity to work directly with global experts in locations all around the globe to experiment on technology which would be essential for Mars Living.
